Orbs

This series of ‘blanket works’ draws on our field studies in Arimatsu, Japan and Wollongong, Australia to explore the indexical and tactile qualities of shibori. In Orbs, we adapted Arimatsu’s traditional clamp resist technique (sekka shibori, generally known as itajime technique) and combined it with Australian native plant dyes – Eucalyptus and Casuarina on discarded merino wool blankets to address current global environmental challenges, and evoke feelings of empathy for the natural world. Through the conjunction of these processes we engage in eco-centric approaches to promote ecologically sustainable practices.
